Definition

An effectiveness check is a planned evaluation performed after a corrective action or CAPA has been implemented to determine whether the action achieved the intended result. It is different from confirming that an action was completed: the check looks for objective evidence that the problem has been controlled, recurrence has been reduced or prevented, and the action has not introduced unacceptable new effects.

Why it matters

For Quality teams, closing a CAPA when tasks are finished is not the same as demonstrating that the CAPA worked. Effectiveness checks create the evidence needed to show that corrective actions changed the underlying condition in practice. Well-designed checks use predefined criteria, an appropriate observation period and relevant data so closure decisions can be defended during audits and management review.
