Definition

Pareto Analysis is a data-based prioritization method commonly presented as a Pareto chart, with categories ordered from the largest contribution to the smallest and often combined with a cumulative percentage line. It helps teams see which types of problems, defects, incidents or suspected causes account for the greatest share of an observed effect. Pareto Analysis identifies where to focus attention; it does not by itself prove the underlying root cause.

Why it matters

Quality and QHSE teams often manage more incidents, findings, complaints and improvement opportunities than they can investigate with equal depth. Pareto Analysis helps them use actual occurrence, cost or impact data to identify where investigation and corrective-action effort is likely to create the greatest value. It is especially useful for trend reviews, management reporting and selecting recurring issue categories for deeper RCA.
