Definition

The Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) cycle is an iterative management and improvement method built around four connected steps: Plan what needs to be achieved and how; Do what was planned; Check performance and evidence against the intended result; and Act on what was learned by correcting, standardizing or improving the process before the next cycle begins. In management systems, PDCA can be applied to individual processes as well as to the system as a whole.

Why it matters

For Quality and QHSE teams, PDCA provides the operating logic that connects planning, controlled execution, monitoring, audits, incidents, CAPA, change and continual improvement. It helps prevent quality management from becoming a set of disconnected records by creating a repeatable loop from requirement or risk, through action and evidence, to evaluation and improvement.
