Definition

HSE stands for Health, Safety and Environment. It describes an integrated management scope used to control occupational health, workplace safety and environmental risks, legal and other obligations, incidents and operational performance. HSE is especially common in industrial, chemical, energy and asset-intensive environments. Unlike QHSE, the term does not explicitly include Quality, although HSE processes often operate alongside the quality management system.

Why it matters

For HSE and QHSE leaders, the practical challenge is rarely one isolated safety or environmental record. Incidents, risk assessments, compliance obligations, audits, changes, corrective actions and contractor activities need to remain connected across sites. A structured HSE approach gives teams a consistent way to assign ownership, retain evidence, follow actions and learn from operational events without fragmenting information across spreadsheets, email and local systems.
