Working at Icologiq: Ester Elferink (Business Consultant)

In 1994, Ester was the first employee to be hired at Icologiq (called Quality Online back then). After 10 years at Icologiq and 15 years of work experience in other areas, she is now back in the team as a Business Consultant. “I love how proud we are of the product we develop together.” 

Hi Ester, why did you decide to come back to Icologiq after 15 years? 

“During my 15 years of working at other companies, I have gained experience in various areas regarding Quality Management, such as road construction, infrastructure and the environment. For example, I found out that many employees do attach value to quality, but it often does not have the highest priority in their daily work. What appeals to me about Icologiq is its people-oriented approach: instead of focusing on the product itself, it looks at the value that the product adds for employees. We really pay attention to people’s needs. I am enthusiastic about helping our customers meet their wishes, so that they can work easily on quality-related matters.” 

How has working at Icologiq changed compared to 15 years ago?

“When I started at Icologiq, the document management system didn’t exist yet. I was mainly involved with individual projects: when a customer asked for improvements with regard to a certain business process, we developed an application for it. At a certain point, we received more and more questions regarding quality management, document management and audits. That’s how ​​Peer Reinhard, the CEO of Icologiq, got the idea to ​​integrate all these modules into one package. Now that I have returned, the way of working in particular has changed, because the team has grown. We now meet each other every day – we used to consult a lot, but in a smaller company it was easier to know what everyone was working on. Especially now that we are working from home because of corona, it is nice to have regular contact, especially as a new employee. Fortunately, I already knew the company a bit and even after I left, I continued to follow the company from a distance.” 

What does a working day look like for you?

“A day starts with the daily’s, which we use to evaluate together which tasks have priority that day. We also exchange information with each other to clarify tasks when needed and we discuss how we can help eachother out when someone is very busy. Contact with customers is a central point throughout the day. This differs per day: for example, yesterday I held a demo for a potential new customer, but tomorrow there may be an existing customer who wants to purchase a new module or receive training.”

What do you like about working at Icologiq?

“What I like about working at Icologiq, is being well aware of what my colleagues are doing. In addition, I enjoy working seriously together on a beautiful product, which we are all enthusiastic about. I really notice that we are proud of Icologiq Elements, the product we develop. I am happy to be able to help people: with Icologiq we support our customers save time in their various departments. The Icologiq system allows employees to immediately take and record actions when problems occur, so that nothing gets forgotten. Another major advantage of the system is that customers can protect their documents and open them up by means of reading rights, so that, for example, the entire organization does not have to see the complaints list. Moreover, people have all documents relevant to their department in one place.” 

You have been working with quality for 15 years. What are the advantages of working with a digital system?

“A big advantage of working with a digital system like Icologiq Elements is that it takes a lot of work off your hands as a quality manager. As a result, you spend less time on administrative and recurring tasks and you can really focus on the things that matter. Moreover, it contributes to insight: Elements is a good aid in increasing support among employees and management. If you want a topic to come to life in the organisation, it must be communicated clearly, so that employees can see its benefit. Instantly seeing how their work adds value, increases employee engagement and motivation. If you don’t have a digital system, you may not miss it, but as soon as you have it, a world will open up for you.”

What do you hope to be able to work on at Icologiq in the future? 

“The current Icologiq system already enables customers to work a lot more efficiently, I hope we can continue this by doing more with Mobile. I think mobile working is the future. For example, if employees can submit their non-conformities or reports via an app, the use of Mobile becomes even more accessible.”
