Looking back: 25 years of Icologiq

By April 1st, 2021, Icologiq has celebrated its 25th anniversary! In 1996, Icologiq launched its first version of quality applications under the name Quality Online. Over the years, while quality has become increasingly important, we have never lost sight of our customers’ needs. What has changed in 25 years? What goals have we set for ourselves and how have we achieved them? What were the main highlights? Founder Peer Reinhard looks back on 25 years of Icologiq. 

“25 years ago, we started Quality Online from a search for a market position in which we saw a future,” says Peer Reinhard. “Our first slogan was ‘Passion for Quality, Passion for People’. In the first years, based on this vision, we scored the first assignments with major customers, such as Trespa, KPN and Dupont. We embarked on a journey with these A-customers in which we have continuously improved our system. Over the years, quality has become increasingly important, and we continued to look for ways to keep on meeting the needs of our customers.”

Proces-driven approach was the cornerstone

“Icologiq was the first player in the market to embed quality management in operational processes,” Peer says. “This process-oriented approach has been the cornerstone of Icologiq’s story from the start. We used to work with separate quality processes: there was a separate process for handling complaints, deviations and maintaining documents and manuals. Over the years, we have devoted ourselves to combining individual modules into an integrated quality system. We now offer a complete platform that customers can configure up themselves based on departments and processes. Our new name has also emerged from this process-oriented approach: Icologiq. The name is a combination of an Ecosystem for Information Management, the Logic of processes, and the IQ of a smart organisation.”

Why is the strong focus on processes so important to the organisation? “Processes provide stability for a company. As a manager, you can monitor a process by carefully checking it in terms of quality, lead-time and result. A process transcends the dividing lines between departmental silos, connecting the departments and people in the organisation. If an organisation works according to the same process in different parts of the world, communication between its employees also becomes easier.” 

Intensive customer contact

“One thing that has never changed, is our approach to the needs of our customers,” Peer says. “What do people want to see in the workplace and how do they want to work? What do they need to be able to perform their tasks better and more easily? Over the years, we have incorporated all our experience-based best practices into our software, making it usable worldwide. If we now receive an application from abroad, we can already with certainty say that our software will function there as well. Implementing the software in Peru is just as easy as in the Netherlands. Some customer reviews have always stayed with me. For example, an American customer once referred to our software as “The Greatest Invention since sliced ​​bread”. “

“The intensive cooperation with our customers and the value we attach to their feedback has resulted in our customers making a significant contribution to the further extension and improvement of the entire product. A number of customers have helped us develop new modules or implement structural improvements. Examples are HM.Clause, with which we have completed a full quality management portfolio, BASF, which is really working on integrating our system with their global implementation of the Responsible Care Act, and VTTI, which applies our software worldwide in all their terminals. This form of cooperation and customer contact has proven to be extremely valuable for us and for our customers. ”
