Icologiq Elements helps De Heus Animal Nutrition consistently meet quality standards – despite the different climates of their farms
For De Heus Animal Nutrition, one of the largest international producers of animal food worldwide, there are two important core ingredients to their production: safety and consistency. With locations all over the world, De Heus wants to ensure that all their factories guarantee the same quality for the feed they produce. To achieve this, De Heus has standardized their approach to quality, using Icologiq’s enterprise quality management system “Elements”. Their standardized way of working not only helps the company guarantee the same quality in all of their locations worldwide, but also enables them to handle actual challenges such as climate change.
De Heus provides farmers all over the world with feed solutions and technical support they need to achieve their individual farm objectives. As every farm is different, De Heus attaches great importance to guaranteeing the same quality standards for each location. “Quality is a core part of our brand. As QA, we ensure that our colleagues can communicate about the consistent premium quality of our feed,” Carl IJzerman says, Group Manager QA & QC at De Heus global in Ede.
IJzerman explains the steps De Heus takes to ensure the company consistently meets all quality standards. “When it comes to consistency, QA makes sure that the parameters which make up the quality of a feed solution are defined. Depending on the animal, the quality levels are determined by physical aspects such as hardness and size, and nutritional ingredients like protein, fats, vitamins, minerals and amino acids. These decisions are made by the formulation department.” The QA department establishes the procedures that ensure that these levels are consistent in every batch of feed, while QC establishes the measuring methods and decisions on acceptance.
Actual challenges in terms of quality
The most important quality criteria in De Heus’ feed solutions are meeting the nutritional needs of livestock and aquaculture and generating predictable results. This can be a challenge, since every farm is different in terms of size, animals and technologies available. In order for each farmer to reach the quality results they want, they need to be consistent in how they are feeding their animals. And then, there are also additional challenges that come with running an international business in 2022 – for example, climate change.
“Climate change will increase the prevalence of mycotoxins in raw materials – global attention to it will become more prominent,” IJzerman expects. “At the same time, there is an area of tension between the increasing accuracy of laboratories versus the level of detail in legislation worldwide. They are no longer in parallel. Now, legislation is based on the principle ‘If you cannot measure it, it is acceptable’, while laboratories are capable of measuring in more and more detail. If legislation stays the same, this will lead to an unworkable situation. It’s an issue for the global food chain that needs political attention in the near future. Along with some other colleagues, I am active in FEFAC and trying to address these issues in industrywide dialogues.”
Meet all worldwide quality and safety standards with Icologiq Elements
In conclusion, the need for standardizing quality processes is more urgent than ever. For many years, De Heus has been using Icologiq Elements, an entreprise quality management system consisting of nine modules, to streamline their quality processes within the company. With Icologiq Elements, De Heus can easily meet quality standards anywhere in the world. The company chose Icologiq for three reasons: its experience in the animal feed industry, the hands-on mentality and simply the good feeling the company gave them.
Icologiq Elements facilitates process innovation from a central point in the organisation. Its goal is to provide organisations with the right tools to solve problems, deal with complaints, implement improvements, implement change in a structured and safe way, measure risks, and ensure that people can work safely everywhere in the organisation. We have previously made a case study where we explain in more detail how De Heus uses Icologiq’s software to ensure the highest quality of their products at all times.
